Health Status and Early Retirement among Korean Middle-aged and elderly

Cho Young-Tae
Abstract
This study examined the association between health status and early retirement among middle-aged and elderly. Data were obtained from a sample of the 2006 and 2008 Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing. The study subjects were 2,165 individuals aged 45 to 58 years who had been employed at the 2006 baseline survey. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to identify predictors of early retirement. People who were retired from the time of survey in 2006 and had no intention to work any longer were categorized as early retirement. For health conditions, various indicators such self-rated health, disability, chronic disease, activities limitation, and depression were used. And changes in health status were considered. A total of 88 individuals retired during the follow-up period. Early retirement was associated with age, gender and several common health outcomes, but socioeconomic status, region and type of household were not related to early retirement. Common health outcomes such as self-rated health, disability, chronic disease, limitation of activity by health and depression are strong predictors of early retirement. Health interventions targeting these conditions may reduce the rates of early retirement, and encourage middle-aged and elderly workers to remain in the labor market.
